Church History

The initial step leading to the organization of Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church was made in 1878 by a small group of Christians who purchased land with the purpose of building a church under the name Sweet Home Baptist Church Association. Records for the organizing of the church were filed on March 28, 1892 and recorded on April 12, 1892. The first church was built in the deep woods of an area near the Houston Ship Channel called Clinton, Texas and said to be built of logs. A lumber building was constructed in 1917.

In the beginning the church had no official pastor. It is told that ministers would come and render services as needed. In 1920 the late Rev. A. Bess was called as the first pastor of Sweet Home Baptist Church Association. The church name was later changed to Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church.
Rev. A.B. Broylan, Rev. J.H. Strowder, Rev. C.S. Gunnels, Rev. H. Cooper, Rev. H.P. Anderson, and Rev. V.W. McGee also served as Pastor of this organization. There have been over 50 Deacons and Trustees to serve this church faithfully. There are presently 13 Deacons serving on the board.

In 1971 the church was moved to the Fidelity area of Houston Texas and a new building was erected under the leadership of Rev. H.P. Anderson.

Under the leadership of Rev. V.W. McGee, who succeeded Rev. H.P. Anderson, the new sanctuary that was built in 1971 was paid off in the eighth year of a fifteen year mortgage and the church prospered financially.

In 1984 Rev. Randy Williams was chosen as the Pastor of the Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church. Under the leadership of Pastor Williams, a new sanctuary was built in 1990, and in 2003, through his vision, the church purchased 19 acres of prime property, located on 16th Street in Galena Park, Texas.  In September 2009, the first service was held in the new building now constructed at this site.  By the grace of God, Sweet Home continues to grow spiritually, numerically and financially. All Praises to God.
